The ancient sun disk of Alaca Hoyuk

The ancient sun disk of Alaca Hoyuk

This object comes from the Hittite site of Alaca Hoyuk in Turkey, which dates to around 3,400 years ago. The Hittites were Indo-Europeans, the same as their neighbors of the time the Mitanni, who worshipped Indian gods. It is possible that this disk represents a sort of “trimurti” – Indian for “three forms” – referring to the divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. This triad might be represented by the three solar symbols with the crosses in the center, representing the sun, of course.
